A Christian's Certainties
One of the most famous quotations from Benjamin Franklin was “Nothing is certain except death and taxes." Depending on your perspective, this can be true. However, from a Christian’s
Perspective there are many certainties we can count on while we are in this world. Christians live in this world, but we are not of this world. We know that everything tangible in this world will pass away. However, the enemy has a way of convincing humans that there are no certainties in life. In our everyday life, we live, become educated and work with those of the world, but we must not be convinced by the world’s uncertainties.
When we are reminded constantly of uncertainties it has a negative effect on your spirit, it could very well cause you to lose your hope, which in turn will cause your faith to suffer. Uncertainties are words and phrases that the enemy has devised for people to say to discourage others and cause them to feel hopeless. Have you heard any of these uncertainties and given way to them? For instance, some have said, having a degree will not guarantee you a job. Yes, that is correct, but what about God! Now that you have cancer your life will never be the same. True your life could change for the better because of God! Once infidelity appears in your marriage, the marriage is over. All can be forgiven through Jesus! So, what about God! I’ve heard that the average young black male is convinced that he won’t live to see 25 years old. Maybe, but why not try God! Oh let’s not forget this one, the black person is the last to get hired and the first to be fired. Oh! But what about God!
A guarantee is something that makes it certain that something will happen. We request guarantees when we make major purchases in life such as a home or a vehicle. When we purchase big ticket items, we want some type of guarantee that what we purchase will do what it is designed to do and if not, we want our hard earned money back. Guarantees make people feel secure. Certainties are just that, something we can depend on. We need certainties because it tells us who we are. These certainties also remind us of where we are going and oh, how happy that day will be. Yes, I am talking about the certainties of God. What are some of the certainties of God? Well, the bible is full of God’s promises and certainties. For instance; when you hear people say God is good, where does that come from?
Goodness is one of the most intrinsic attributes of God. You can count on God’s goodness. His goodness is not because of someone’s made up standard for goodness. God is good because He is the source of goodness. He, and He alone, is the rule and the measure of what we truly know to be good. This, for Christians, is a certainty that we recognize and know for a fact that all God will do in our lives will be for our good. This is the believer's rest and assurance. Psalm 25:8 says, “Good and upright is the Lord.” And James 1:17 tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” That’s a certainty!
In Jeremiah 23:23-24 God’s word say’s “Am I a God near at hand?" says the LORD, "And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him?" says the LORD; "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" says the LORD.” Immanence describes the God who is at hand. He works through the lives of His creation to produce a love for and enjoyment of His word. He does not merely sit back and observe His creation; He is present and participating in His world. It is soul satisfaction to know that we are under His protective hand. That’s a certainty!
With all the turmoil in this world it is alarming to say the least. Our leaders can’t seem to stop fighting each other long enough to create long awaited gun control legislature. The independent world economy is on shaky ground. Have you looked at your 401k lately? Police taking lives because of the color of one’s skin. Brothers turning against brothers. Mothers fighting with daughters; it’s enough to make your head spin. But God!
Ephesians 1:11 states, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will."
God’s Sovereignty is a certainty! God has divine control over everything that happens. God is on the Throne and there is nothing that is outside of the control of His loving hands. Not the designs of the wicked one, not the way the earth works itself, such as tsunamis and tornados, and not even our own free will. No matter how chaotic this world may seem to be, no matter what others may try to convince you to believe. God is in control, still in charge and on the Throne, and that my friend is a certainty!
